Soap is made of a mixture of lye and water with fats or oil through a complex chemical procedure. Lye which is also known as sodium hydroxide (a base) converts Fats or Oil (an acid) to soap; and this process is called saponification. When oil or fats come into contact with the lye or sodium hydroxide, the saponification process begins whereby lye turns the oil or fat into a completely new substance that we know as soap. How Soap Cleans Soap cleans by acting as an agent between water and dirt. Soap allows the water to make the surface wet/damp, therefore enhancing the cleansing prowess. Soapy water tends to soak through the surface being cleaned therefore allowing the water to wash away dirt. In addition, soap grabs dirt and connects it to the water and allows water to wash it away. Why does it matter which soap you use? The largest organ in our body is our skin; it is our body's defense mechanism against outside impurities, and it maintains proper body temperature. Our skin is also permeable and absorbs everything you put on it. Most commercial skin care products contain many unnecessary, if not unhealthy, chemical additives which are absorbed into our skin every time we use them. Using harsh chemicals and detergents on our skin compromises our immune system by damaging the Acid Mantle of our skin. Additionally, most commercial 'soaps' have had all of the glycerin removed for cosmetic use, such as lotion. Which means those commercial soaps will leave our skin dry! In contrast, using handcrafted soap, particularly cold processed varieties, ensures that your skin is lavished with ample moisturizers and nutrients as you wash. By using handcrafted soap, you get the benefits of all of the naturally formed glycerin, as well as a myriad of other nutrients added to each recipe - all without harmful chemical additives. One other bonus - handcrafted soap is kinder to our environment than commercial ‘soaps’, which contain harsh detergents. Will handmade soap be gentle to my skin? Yes! The reason the Real Handmade Soap is gentle to the skin is because of its high glycerin content. Glycerin is a natural by-product formed during the soap-making process. Environmentally Friendly Handmade soaps moisturize our skin and are environmentally friendly. Unlike detergent, once it is in contact with water, it will be bio- degraded by carbon dioxide within 24 hours. Therefore, it will not contaminate the rivers and ocean. Spare a thought for our future generation, start using handmade soap to protect our Mother Earth from getting polluted. Care & Use: Gently cleanses and moisturizes the skin.
